Nar Phu Trek is an extraordinary journey to one of the most remote areas in Nepal that lies close to Tibet. This off-the-beaten-path trek will take you on a memorable adventure to the heart of Nar and Phu Valleys, which were once forbidden to outsiders. This trek offers a unique mix of ancient Buddhist culture and raw Himalayas which are still unspoiled and isolated. Additionally, Tilicho Lake and Mesokantho Pass are crucial destinations for passionate trekkers seeking to reach the summit and witness the breathtaking view of Tilicho Lake, which can leave one speechless upon reaching the top of Mesokantho Pass and enjoying the panoramic view of the Himalayas. This 12-day trek offers an unparalleled adventure experience.
Starting early morning after breakfast, we begin early and drive along the Prithivi highway and then enter a branch road to reach Besisahar. Then, we travel across colorful traditional villages, several monasteries and farmlands for a total of 9 hours to reach Koto by Jeep. The path continues through pine forests before reaching Koto, a small village inhabited by the Gurungs.
After registering our restricted area permits at the police check post at Koto, we travel along the banks of Soti Khola through wonderful pine forests, past several suspension bridges and waterfalls, ultimately reaching Dharamshala in about 5 hours. Hiking further, we will ascend steeply and arrive at Meta Village. It is a part of the Tibetan Plateau with some stunning views of Lamjung Himal along with Annapurna Il.
After breakfast, we continue our trek, initially reaching a Buddhist Stupa (chorten). Shortly after, the trail splits—left towards Nar village and right towards Phu. We take the right path and pass several traditional stone houses (goths) built against large boulders. We then proceed to Kyang via Chyaku (3500m). The path is well-marked by ridges. It takes about 3 hours to trek from Meta to Chyaku, and another 1-2 hours from Chyaku to Kyang.
Today’s path features gentle uphill slopes as we walk alongside the Phu River towards the remote village of Phu Gaon. This area, including Phu village and the larger Manang region, is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). Along the way, we may see beautiful Blue Sheep, Himalayan Thar, and possibly even snow leopards. However, caution is needed as the trail from Kyang to Phu has dangerous rocky sections and potential landslide areas.
After leaving Kyang, we quickly enter the dry, desert-like gorge ofthe Phu Khola stream. We continue along the east side of the valley, cross a wooden bridge, and climb some steps past a smooth, worn-down rock to reach Phu Village.
On this day, we will acclimatize to the high elevation as we take a rest and explore the village of Phu. It is a hidden valley with some exclusive cultures and traditions. Ethnic groups like Gurung, Lama, and Ghale live here with agriculture and animal husbandry being their means of livelihood. Moreover, we will visit the Tashi Lakhang Monastery, which is regarded as one of the greatest monasteries in the world. Alternatively, we can hike to Himlung Base Camp, which isa roximatel a 6-7 hour round trip.
After breakfast, we begin our trek from Phu Village to Nar Phedi, descending primarily through rocky terrains and hiking alongside the Phu Khola. We pass through the Phu Valley gate and trek through wide grasslands where Blue Sheep are often seen. The trail leads us to Kyang Village, a Buddhist settlement, and through Jhunum before stopping for lunch at Chyakhu.
Continuing along the ridges, we cross suspension bridges offering stunning views of the Nar Phu River and its dramatic gorge. We encounter Manl stones with ancient Tibetan inscriptions, reflecting the region’s unique culture.
On the 6th day of the Nar Phu trek, after breakfast, we head towards the Nar
Valley from Nar Phedi. Along the way, we marvel at the snow-capped Kang Garu summit. The trek ascends a rocky, windy path with traditional stairs in some sections. We cross three hills over 5-6 hours before reaching the entrance gate of Nar Valley, adorned with Tibetan carvings. From here, we enjoy stunning views of the Himalayas, including Annapurna Il, Himlung Himal, Tilicho Peak, Gan a urna, and Manaslu.
It’s a bit challenging day. We begin early and hike to Kangla Pass. The pass offers some stunning views of the Annapurna Massif, Gangapurna & Tilich peak. After descending from the top, we will reach Ngwal where we spend the night in the beautiful teahouse.
After breakfast, you will head to Manang village via the beautiful traditional village Braka. In Manang, we will have lunch and check the medical condition, such as low blood pressure, oxygen level, and purchase necessary stuff at Manang . This is the last market where we can purchase some snacks and other necessary stuff for remaining trekking days.
Today is a rest day for us at Manang Village, a small yet charming village nestled in the mountains. We will spend the day relaxing and rejuvenating at the village’s amenities, which include several excellent restaurants, a spa, and a bakery. Of course, there will be hot showers available. We will take advantage of this time to rest, wash our clothes, and prepare for our upcoming challenging adventure to Tilicho Lake and Mesokantho Pass.
Today is a different day for us. Changes in the vegetation and landscape make it more interesting for anyone . Today, we have to pass the landslide-prone zone after passing the Shreekharka. The hike is gradually up to the Shreekharka and flat to Tilicho base camp.
It is one of the beautiful and challenging yet rewarding days for us. The first phase of the hike is to Tilicho Lake, which is located at 4910 meters, and the first ascent to the lake is tough and beautiful, passing 33 turns to reach the lake and spending an hour at the lake. We continue our hike along the lake to the pass. We have to take the right side of the lake and beautiful Tilicho Peak, seen just next to the lake. From Tilicho Lake to the pass, we have to hike around 3 hrs through the glaciers, and at the end, we hike up to the pass, which is approximately 2-3 hrs ascent from the lake to reach the Mesokantho, and from there, we hike down to the Ghodataki which is at an 4100 meter elevation, which is another 3 hours descending from the pass.
Note: On the same day we can reach tojomsom after taking ajeep drive rom Yakkharka which is 1 hours wakin distance rom Ghodataki.
An easy and grassland hike to Jomsom is another great experience, enjoying the view of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri mountains, which is totally different compared to the previous day’s scenery. Hiking down to Jomsom will take around 5-6 hours through the motorable road and trekking trails. Upon reaching Jomsom, we can transfer to Pokhara by bus or jeep to Pokhara, which is about a 6-7 hrs drive . Overnight in Pokhara.
